Summer check for motorhomes and caravans: set off well prepared
As soon as the season begins, many people set off again in their motorhome or caravan. That makes sense, because what could be more liberating than setting off whenever you like? But before you set off on your first journey, it’s important to carry out a thorough check!
A motorhome or caravan may have been left unused for months, and it is precisely then that minor issues can arise.
Check beforehand
Think, for example, of a flat or low battery, low tyre pressure, dirty water in the tank, an out-of-date gas cylinder or lights that aren’t working properly. By checking a few things beforehand, you can avoid any inconvenience on the road and ensure your holiday gets off to a much more relaxed start.
Safety first
Always check tyre pressure, lights and fluid levels before setting off. Also check that the domestic battery is working properly and inspect the gas system. Is the gas cylinder still in good condition and properly connected? And are the fresh water and waste water tanks clean, empty or correctly filled? A clean water tank is important for safe and comfortable use whilst on the road.
Fresh and clean on your journey
A thorough clean is no luxury either. Clean the motorhome or caravan inside and out, clear out any old supplies and check for any damp patches or musty odours. That way, you’ll set off not only safely, but also feeling fresh.
Documents in order
It’s also wise to have all your documents ready. These include the registration certificate, insurance documents, green card, maintenance records and any environmental stickers required for travelling abroad. A little preparation can save you a lot of time and stress on the road.
Cleaning on your return
After your holiday, it’s important not to put the motorhome or caravan away straight away. Clean the interior, remove all food, empty the fridge and leave cupboards and doors ajar to prevent mould from forming. The exterior also needs attention: insect remains, dirt and road salt can damage the paintwork if left for too long.
Preparing for storage
Is your motorhome or caravan going back into storage after your holiday? If so, empty the fresh water and waste water tanks completely, service the batteries and check the tyre pressures in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. This will keep your motorhome or caravan in good condition and ready for your next adventure.
A motorhome or caravan is more than just a means of transport. It is the foundation for freedom, convenience and wonderful memories. With regular maintenance, a thorough summer check and a safe storage space, you can enjoy every journey without a care in the world.
